We have committed to a program of establishing Environmental Management Systems certified to the international standard AS/NZS ISO 14001:2004 right across our business. Tooheys brewery in Sydney and South Australian Brewing Co in Adelaide, as well as six of our Australian wineries (Petaluma, St Hallet, Mitchelton, Stonier, Knappstien and Smithbrook) are so far accredited. This brings the percentage of Lion Nathan business units certified to 40 per cent, and our aim is to have all of our business units certified by 2013.
In 2009, we are continuing to roll out the accreditation process across our operations, with particular focus on teh Wither Hills winery and Canterbury Brewery in NZ.
Additionally, there are a number of environmental protocols we commit to as part of our environmental strategy:
- The Australian National Packaging Covenant and New Zealand Packaging Accord - The leading instruments for packaging waste management and product stewardship in Australia and New Zealand.
- The Packaging Council of New Zealand – The industry association that address issues relating to packaging usage and waste in New Zealand.
- The Australian Packaging Stewardship Forum (previously known as the Beverage Industry Environment Council) - The industry association that aims to create sustainable solutions for beverage packaging and waste in Australia.
- The Greenhouse Challenge Plus Program – A voluntary, joint initiative between the Australian Government and industry aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
- The National Pollutant Inventory – An Australian Government program which involves reporting emissions from fuel combustion and other operational activities.
- Water Management Programs – Our largest brewery, Tooheys, participates in Sydney Water’s voluntary ‘Every Drop Counts’ water reduction program and the NSW Department of Energy, Utilities and Sustainability water reduction program. Castlemaine Perkins and SA Brewing Co have a Water Efficiency Management Programs with their relevant State and Local government authorities. Swan Brewery has also teamed up with the West Australian Water Corporation to promote efficient water usage through the Waterwise Business Programme.
- Energy Management Programs – as part of our ongoing comittment to reduce electricity and fuel energy usage, Lion Nathan Australia is participating in the Federal Government Energy Efficiency Opportunities Program and Tooheys in the NSW Department of Energy, Utilities and Sustainability energy reduction program. Lion Nathan has also signed up to the National Greenhouse & Energy Reporting (NGER) scheme and will be providing reports to the Federal Government in 2009. The NGER will provide a single national reporting framework for energy and greenhouse gas emissions, providing robust data as a foundation for an Emissions Trading Scheme in Australia.
- The Winemakers' Federation of Australia (WFA) - The WFA is the peak industry body representing Australia's wineries on all national and international issues.
- The South Australian, Victorian and West Australian Wine Industry Associations – the peak bodies representing the winegrape growers in these States.
